Born Charlotte Augusta Matilda, Princess of Great Britain and Ireland, designated Princess Royal of the United Kingdom in 1789.

Named for her mother, her paternal grandmother Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales (born Princess of Saxe-Gotha), and her aunt and godmother Princess Caroline Matilda. Called "Royal" by her family.

Daughter of George III. King of the United Kingdom (1738-1820) and his wife Sophie Charlotte, Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818)
