Younger son of Friedrich Eugen, (reigning) Duke of Würrtemberg (1732-1797) and Sophia Dorothea, Princess of Brandenburg-Schwedt (1736-1798).

Born: Mömpelgard (then Württemberg, today Montbéliard) 24. Apr 1771

Married: Coburg 17. Nov 1798 Antoinette, Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld (1779-1824), daughter of Franz, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld (1750-1806) by his second wife Auguste Gräfin Reuß zu Ebersdorf (1757-1831).
