Pyotr III of Russia

Born Karl Peter Ulrich Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. Succeded his father as Duke of Holstein-Gottorp in 1739 and his aunt Yelisavyeta I as Emperor of All the Russians in 1762, assuming the name Pyotr III Fyodorovich. He was overthrown after six month in a conspiracy led by his wife, who succeeded him to the throne.

Son of Karl Friedrich Duke of Holstein-Gottorp (1700-1739) and Anna Petrovna Grand Duchess of Russia (1708-1728)

Married: Saint Petersburg 21. Aug 1745 Sophie (Yekaterina Alekseyevna) Princess of Anhalt-Zerbst, who ruled as Yekaterina II Empress of All the Russians from 1762-1796 (1729-1769), his second cousin, daughter of Christian August Fürst von Anhalt-Zerbst (1690-1747) and Johanna Elisabeth Princess of Holstein-Gottorp (1712-1760)

• Pavel I Petrovich, Emperor of All the Russians (1754-1801, murdered) m. 1773 Wilhelmine (Natalya Alekseyevna) Landgräfin of Hesse-Darmstadt (1755-1776); m. 1776 Sophia (Maria Fyodorovna) Duchess of Württemberg (1759-1828)

• Anna Petrovna Grand Duchess of Russia (1757-1758)

Died: Assassinated at Rophsa Palace near Satin Petersburg, where he was imprisoned, 6. Jul 1762

Buried: Alexander Nevsky Monastery, reburied with full honors in the St Peter and St Paul Cathedral, Saint Petersburg in 1796
