Born Ferdinand Viktor Albert Meinrad, Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He succeeded his childless uncle Carol I. as King Ferdinand I. of Romania in 1914.
Son of Leopold, Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1835-1905) and his wife Antonia, Infanta of Portugal (1845-1913).

Married: Sigmaringen 10. Jan 1893 Princess Marie of Edinburgh (1875-1937), daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who succeded as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1893 (1844-1900), and his wife Maria Alexandrovna, Grand Duchess of Russia (1853-1920)
