He was named Emmanuel to continue the tradition of names with El-/-el among his siblings; named Léopold for his great-grandfather, King Léopold II of the Belgians; Guillaume for his godfather, the Hereditary Prince of Luxembourg; François for Saint Francis of Assisi, on whose feast day the prince was born; and Marie for the Virgin Mary, as per tradition with Catholic royalty.
